In this episode, we meet Minki Manzi of London-based band 50ft Woman. This meeting of the minds was long overdue. I’ve actually known Minki for about 15 years, but we’d never actually spoken until this show. Allow me to explain and give full disclosure. We were both presenters at the late, great Recharged Radio. Back in the early days of internet radio, Jordan Thomas started Recharged, in London, UK, and gathered together a ragtag bunch of like-minded folks who simply wanted to create the best underground radio station and music scene possible. Most of them actually lived in London, and gathered together on Friday nights for the live Friday Forum show. They promoted the latest music, the local club scene, festivals, and even had live bands in the studio. I did my little prerecorded overseas show once a week from here in California, but was always impressed by the camaraderie of my British friends. They even went to the pub after their shows, and I always wished I could be part of the fun. But I did live vicariously through them, and did my best to contribute from 5,000 miles away.
Recharged Radio was so embedded in the London music scene, that many of the presenters were part of it. Minki’s band, 50ft Woman, was right there in the mix, with their dynamic, entertaining live shows. She’s a great songwriter, taking note of some of the quirkier things she’d observed. The band was, and still is, larger than life. So here we are in 2024, and Minki’s launched and started promoting their Bandcamp site, so that new audiences (like you Woody Radio listeners) can become acquainted with their music. https://50ftwoman.bandcamp.com/album/m-nage-trois
The first release out of the gate is the reissue of the Ménage Á Trois EP. 3 songs (naturally) that serve as an apt introduction to 50ft Woman. Pick it up and enjoy!
We also had the chance to talk about her other project–The Maranellos, with her husband Paul. With its folky, Americana focus, it sounds nothing like 50ft Woman. But Minki’s and Paul’s harmonies are outstanding, and we’ll hear one of these songs on the show as well.
I’ve always found Minki to be smart, funny, techie, and artistic–and it was such a pleasure to finally chat with her and confirm all of this, and more. One thing I can say for certain–we’ll do this again sometime. But for now, enjoy the show.
