In this episode, we get to meet Bex Marshall. She’s a wonderful British blues singer-songwriter-guitarist. And those three titles could go in any order and be appropriate. She’s that strong in all areas.
She just released her first album in over 10 years, “Fortuna”, and is on a quickie visit to the US to play WoodSongs, a big radio gig in Lexington, Kentucky. But her first stop was in New York City, and that’s where I caught up with her.
Turns out that she’d been busy touring the whole world for years, and the Covid pandemic stopped all that dead in its tracks. But always creating, Bex wisely used the time to craft Fortuna. It’s a wonderful, bluesy album, and really showcases her songwriting. Though it’s a band record, you get to hear her guitar work front and center. The songs’ arrangements are suitable to scale up or down, as she’ll be playing some of these in upcoming solo gigs (including WoodSongs) with nothing but her voice and her Resonator guitar. My favorite track (among many) is the album closer “When It’s Gone”. But listen to the whole thing; she takes you on a tour de force through many different emotions and sonic textures.
