This episode is the first live interview doubleheader in a while. First up, we meet Chelsea Nenni of NYC-based Late Slip. We had a warm, engaging conversation, and talked about her various coast to coast migrations. We learned the story behind the band, and the making of the amazing debut record “I Love You”. It’s centered around Americana, but you’d be hard-pressed to pigeonhole her sound. Chelsea’s influences are deep and wide, and they show up, sometimes in funny ways. The theme is love, naturally, all types of it. Don’t miss the inspired Blondie cover–it makes you want to slap your forehead with your palm, and ask “why didn’t I think of that?” What does the band name Late Slip refer to? Listen to the conversation and find out. More info on Late Slip at https://lateslipmusic.com/.
Later on, Don Hawkins and David MacNeill return to the show. These two native Sacramentans were in the band Internal Affairs back in the early 1980s, went their separate ways, and lived a lot of life in the decades since. But musical miracles do happen, and they reunited a few years ago, and started writing songs together. A lot. Like a couple hundred of them. They’ve been steadily releasing albums, either individually or as the collective Hawkins-MacNeill. This time, it’s Don’s turn, and the new album “Introvert” is wonderful. Well written, performed, and crafted, it’s also the best sounding of their efforts to date, thanks to David, um, “mastering” the mastering technique. A couple of mini song cycles on the album showcase the high level of songwriting. More info at https://donhawkins.bandcamp.com/album/introvert
