In this episode, we get to meet multi-instrumentalist songwriter Stephen Bluhm. He’s got something in common with Taylor Swift–they both released two albums last Friday, 4/19! Aside from that, the comparisons start to thin out. Only one of those fine artists was with me on Woody Radio on Saturday, 4/20, and that would be Stephen.
We chatted about his sophomore release(s), “Out of the Nowhere. Into the Here.”. I pluralized it, because there is not only a main album, there is a companion instrumental album. The main album features all acoustic instruments, such as piano, clarinet, oboe, and heckelphone–an instrument most of us (myself included) weren’t previously familiar with. It’s very vocal forward, pastoral chamber pop–with Stephen singing his wonderful lyrics in an intriguing, start-stop manner. That style makes the songs that much more intimate. The companion album is the same songs, without vocals, with the occasional extra instrument added to augment the sound and feel. I could easily hear some of these instrumentals placed in films or television shows.
What’s remarkable is that this is not Stephen’s usual musical style. His debut album was more of an electronic pop affair, more bouncy and danceable. Check out some of his videos to get a taste of it. But that’s not his usual style either. His next album will be different still. Stephen Bluhm doesn’t have a “usual style”–he plans to keep growing and evolving. More info at https://www.stephenbluhm.fun
